Today, we are all here to discuss what we should do in the next five to ten years. So, what will Alibaba become in the future? Since we were working on China Pages, I’ve always said our competitors are not domestic websites, but overseas websites. Our competitors are not in China, but in America’s Silicon Valley.
So first, we should position Alibaba as a global website, not just a domestic website. Second, we need to learn the hard working spirit of Silicon Valley. If we go to work at 8am and go home at 5pm, this is not a high tech company, and Alibaba will never be successful. If we have that kind of 8am-to-5pm spirit, then we should just go and do something else.
Americans are strong at hardware and systems. But on information and software, Chinese brains are just as good as theirs. All of our brains are just as good as theirs. This is the reason we dare to compete with Americans. If we are a good team and know what we want to do, one of us can defeat ten of them. We can beat government agencies and big famous companies because of our innovative spirit. Otherwise, what is the difference between us and them?
Everybody knows the Internet is a bubble that keeps getting bigger and bigger. But when will it burst? Yahoo’s stock will fall and eBay’s stock will rise and maybe after eBay’s stock rises, Alibaba’s stock will rise. So don’t worry. The dream of the Internet won’t burst. We will have to pay painful price in the next 3 to 5 years. It is the only way we can succeed. So, the goal is Alibaba will IPO in 2002. Chinese Transcript
而今天我想把大家请过来，跟大家共同探讨以后至少五年十年我们要做的事情。那么阿里巴巴我们将做成什么样? 我想从黄页的时候我就提过，黄页所要瞄准的对象不是国内站而是国际站，我们所有的竞争对手不在于中国，而在美国的硅谷。
如果说第一，我们把阿里巴巴定位就把它作为国际站点，我们不要把它定位国内站点。第二个呢我想就是我们要学会硅谷的那种拼劲，如果我们是早上八点钟上 班，五点钟下班，这个不是搞高科技，这个绝对不是我们阿里巴巴的精神，如果说我们以这种精神反正我上班八点钟上班，五点钟就下班了，赶紧去其他地方。
人家美国人强就强在硬件，强就强在他的系统就是这个这方面确实比我们高，但是玩信息玩软的，中国脑袋决不比别人差。我们在座的所有人的脑袋绝不比任 何人差。这就是我们敢跟美国人斗的机会，我们绝对敢斗，如果我们是好的Team好的团队，我们自己知道我们想做什么，我们想干点什么的时候，我相信我们是 可以一当十的。我们能够赢政府机构，我们能够赢其他很多的民营企业，大的企业的时候，凭的我们的精神，我们一手的创新概念，以及我们这种拼劲才能去斗，否则的话，跟他们什么区别呢？
谁都知道Internet是个泡沫，我刚才讲的危机感，就是Internet这个泡沫就越来越大，什么时候破，雅虎的股票掉了，eBay的股票会涨，有一天eBay的股票涨了后，阿里巴巴的胜出的股票涨，所以不要担心。我觉得Internet这个梦不会破，这个泡沫不会破，我们为后面的三五年所付出的代价是非常惨痛。只有这样惨痛的代价，才会赢得我们未来的取得成功，那么目标是2002年，阿里巴巴上市。

Most people give up on themselves easily.
You know the human spirit is powerful?
There is nothing as powerful. It’s hard to kill the human spirit! Anybody can feel good when they have their health,
their bills are paid, they have happy relationships.
Anybody can be positive then.
Anybody can have a larger vision then.
Anybody can have faith under those kind of circumstances.
The real challenge of growth mentally, emotionally,
and spiritually, comes when you get knocked down.
It takes courage to act. Part of being hungry
when you have been defeated.
It takes courage to start over again.
Fear kills dreams. Fear kills hope.
Fear put people in the hospital.
Fear can age you.
It can hold you back from doing something that you know within yourself that you are capable of doing, but it will paralyse you.
At the end of your feelings is nothing,
but at the end of every principle is a promise.
Behind your little feelings, it might not be
absolutely nothing at the end of your little feelings.
But behind every principle is a promise.
And some of you in your life, the reason why you’re
not at your goal right now, cause you just all about your feelings.
All on your feelings, you don’t feel like waking up, so who does?
Everyday you say “no” to your dreams, you might be pushing your dreams back a whole six months, a whole year!
That one single day, that one day you didn’t get up could have pushed your stuff back, I don’t know how long.
Don’t allow your emotions to control you.
We are emotional, but what you want to begin to
discipline your emotion. If you don’t discipline and
contain your emotion, they will use you.
You want it and you’re going to go all out to have it.
It’s not going to be easy, when you want to change, it’s not easy.
If it were in fact easy, everybody would do it.
But if you’re serious, you will go all out.
I’m in control here. I’m not going to let this get me down,
I’m not going to let this destroy me. I’m coming back.
And I’ll be stronger and better because of it.
You’ve got to make a declaration.
That this is what you stand for.
You’re standing up for your dreams,
you’re standing up for peace of mind, you’re standing up for health. Take full responsibility for your life.
Accept where you are and the responsibility
that you’re going to take yourself where you want to go.
You can decide that I am going to live each day as if it were my last. Live your life with passion. With some drive.
Decide that you’re going to push yourself.
The last chapter to your life has not been written yet, and it doesn’t matter about what happened yesterday.
It doesn’t matter about what happened to you.
What matter is what are you going to do about it.
This year I will make this goal become a reality.
I won’t talk about it anymore. I can. I can! I CAN!
To persevere I think is important for everybody. Don’t give up, don’t give in. There’s always an answer to everything.

I don’t know what that dream is that you have. I don’t care how disappointing it might’ve been as you’ve been working toward that dream, but that dream that you’re holding in your mind, that it’s possible!
That some of you already know. That it’s hard, it’s not easy. It’s hard changing your Life. That in the process, of working on your dreams, you are going to incur in a lot of disappointment, a lot of failure, a lot of pain. There are moments when you’re gonna doubt yourself. You said God, why, why is this happening to me? I’m just trying to take care of my children and my mother, I’m not trying to steal or rob from anybody. How does this have to happen to me? For those of you that have experience some hardships, don’t give up on your dream. There’re rough times that are gonna come, but they have not come to stay, they have come to pass.
Greatness, is not this wonderful, esoteric, illusive, god-like feature that only the special among us will ever taste. It’s something that truly exists, in all of us.
It’s very important for you to believe, that you are the one.
Most people, they raise a family, they earn a living and then they die. They stop growing, they stop working on themselves, they stop stretching, they stop pushing themselves. There’re a lot of people who like to complain but they don’t wanna do anything about their situation. And most people don’t work on their dreams, why?
One is because of fear, the fear of failure, “what if things don’t work out”? And the fear of success, “what If they do and I can’t handle it”? These are not risk takers.
You spent so much time with other people, you spent so much time trying to get people to like you, you know other people more than you know yourself, you studied them, you know about them, you want hang out like them, you want to be just like them. And you know what? You’ve invested so much time on them, you don’t know who you are. I challenge you to spend time by yourself.
It’s necessary, that you get the losers out of your Life, if you want to live your dream. But people who are running towards their dreams, Life have a special kind of meaning.
When you become the “right” person, what you do is you start seperating yourself from other people. You begin to have a certain uniqueness, as long as you follow on other people, as long as you being a “copycat”, you’ll never ever be the best “copycat” in the world, but you will be the best you could be. I’m challenging you to define your value.
That everybody won’t see it, that everybody won’t join you, that everybody won’t have the vision… It’s necessary to know that. That you are an uncommon breed. It’s necessary that you align yourself with people and attract people into your business, who are hungry! People who are unstoppable and unreasonable, people who are rebuilding to live Life just as it is and who want more! The people that are living their dreams, of party winners, to attach themselves to. The people that are living their dreams, are the people that know that if it’s gonna happen it’s up to them.
If you want to be more successful, if you want to have and do stuff you never done before, I’m asking you, to INVEST IN YOU!
Someone’s opinion of you does not have to become your reality. That you don’t have to go through Life, being a victim. And even though you face disappointments, you have to know within yourself… that I can do this, even if no one else sees it for me, I must see it for myself.
This is what I believe and I’m willing to die for it. Period.
No matter how bad it is or how bad it gets, I’m going to make it!
I wanna represent an idea. I wanna represent possibilities.
There’s some of you right now, you want to go to next level. ‘I want a council, I want to be an engineer, I want to be a doctor. ” Listen to me. You can’t get to that level. You can’t get to that level economically where you want to be, until you start investing your mind. You’re not reading books. I’m challenging you all to go to conferences. I dare you to invest time! I dare you to be alone! I dare you to spent an hour to get to know yourself. When you become who you are, when you become the person that you are created to be, designed to be who you were designed to be. When you become an individual. What you do is you take yourself and you start separating yourself from other people. I’m challenging you, to get to the place where people do not like you or do not even bother you no more. Why? Cause you’re not concerned with trying to make them happy. Because you’re trying to blow up, you’re trying to get to the next level. I need you to invest in your mind. Invest in your mind.
If you still talk about your dream. If you still talk about your goal. But you have not done anything, JUST TAKE THE FIRST STEP! That you can make your parents proud, you can make your school proud, you can touch millions of people lives and the world will never be the same again, because you came this way. Don’t let nobody steal your dream! After we face a rejection and a “NO” or we have a meeting and no one shows up, or somebody said, you can count on me, and they don’t come through. What if we had that kind of attitude that cause reposes, nobody believes in you, you’ve lost again, and again, and again! The lights are cut off but you still looking at your dream, reviewing it every day and saying to yourself:

Be a good student. The way to entrepreneur, just learn some experience.
Before 30 Years Old:
Follow somebody. Go to a small company. Normally in a big company it’s good to learn processes. You’re a part of a big machine. But when you go to a small company, you learn the passion, you learn the dreams, and you learn how to do lots of things at any one time. So before 30 years old, it’s not which company you go, it’s which boss you follow. It’s very important. A good boss teaches you differently.
From 30 to 40 Years Old:
You have to think very clearly if you want to work for yourself. If you really want to be an entrepreneur.
From 40 to 50 Years Old:
You have to do all the things that you are good at. Don’t try to drop into the new area, it’s too late. You may be successful, but the rate of dying is too big. Think about how to focus on things that you’re good at.
From 50 to 60 Years Old:
Work for the young people. Because young people can do better than you. So rely on them, invest on them, making sure that they are good.
Over 60 Years Old:
Spend time on yourself, on the beach, sunshine, it’s normally too late for you to change. This is my advice to young people: At 25-years old, make enough mistakes. Don’t worry. You fall, you stand up. Enjoy it. Enjoy the show.
Jack Ma on Regrets:
I regret a lot of things. I regret that I meet the Media. I regret that I speak in the public. Because I could have my own privacy. I regret that I work so hard and spend so little time with my family. If I have another life, I would never do things like this. And my wife said: “You do not belong to me. You belong to Alibaba.” But, in all, Life is so short. It’s all about experience. People seek different views. Some people think you’re rich, you’re successful. But you’re not! Some people say this guy does not have money and he’s a terrible guy. Maybe not! So everybody choose his or her own life. We have a lot of problems that people never thought of. Because running a company for 34,000 young people, operating a company for more than 500 million people. If 1% of the 500 million people are bad guys, you got 5 million bad guys. So it’s a headache. But it’s too late to regret. Forget about regret. Think about I have another 10-20 years to go. So enjoy the show, enjoy the ride. You’re the same.
